Knitting in Service Society
KISS is a group of girls and
women who knit to benefit those in need. It meets monthly to knit together and
provide peer support. Some members knit at home during the month as they are
able. See Boston Globe article: http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/articles/2008/05/15/their_knitting_fulfills_a_passion_and_a_need/
We are working on two
types of projects that can each range from easy to more advanced – your
choice. They are:
- Scarves and hats for Boston’s homeless through Common Cathedral – given as Christmas presents, to be turned in November
9, 2008. For info on their needs and a pattern, see http://www.ecclesia-ministries.org/howto.html
. Dark colors work best as most congregants are male.
- Scarves, hats and slippers
for Boston’s poor and homeless women at the Women’s Lunch Place – given
monthly for birthday presents and also as winter holiday presents, to be
turned in several times a year. For info on their needs, see http://www.womenslunchplace.org/news/index.html#bday
- Donations of knitted
goods can be dropped off at the
KISS poster/display basket in the entryway of FRS. Please feel free to go
to the FRS website to access this document in electronic form so
you can follow the links. Questions, call FRS at 978-369-5180.
RESOURCES:
- A great resource for
patterns (knitting and crochet) and inspiration is the Lion Brand website : http://cache.lionbrand.com/
This is a source for over 1,000 patterns (most are free)
and lots of great info. You can sign up for their free e-newsletter;
they even have a separate free subscription option for their fun kids’
monthly e-newsletter.
- And finally, another
resource if you ever get stuck. It has online videos: http://www.knittinghelp.com/
UPCOMING MEETINGS:
- The group meets Tuesday
nights at 7:30 in Union Hall, in the third floor conference
room. Enter the building through back door on the right. Bring your own
needles and yarn. And by all means, feel free to invite friends.
Note that the March 2009 involves a special guest speaker and will be
held at the Gleason Public Library.

show us who we are and bind us together,” says Kathy. This hour-long
presentation, illustrated with photographs, knitted items and antiques from
Kathy’s collection, explores the world of knitting past and present through
stories. For more about Kathy and Knitting Out Loud, check out www.knittingoutloud.com . Bring your knitting and bring a friend for this special treat!
